Poetry for a Dark Night

Poetry for a Dark Night

Sunlight feels precious now, as each day grows shorter and the nights last longer. In this darkening time, I seek light wherever it can be found.

This week, I was going through some cards and notes from beloved friends and came across this poem that someone shared with me many years ago. I am in a kind of wordless space myself right now, journeying through some deep inner territories, so I am happy to let this poem speak for me. Perhaps it will illuminate something for you as well.

Blessings to all of you!

The Journey

Above the mountains
the geese turn into
the light again
Painting their
black silhouettes
on an open sky.

Sometimes everything
has to be
inscribed across
the heavens

so you can find
the one line
already written
inside you.

Sometimes it takes
a great sky
to find that

small, bright
and indescribable
wedge of freedom
in your own heart.

Sometimes with
the bones of the black
sticks left when the fire
has gone out

someone has written
something new
in the ashes of your life.

You are not leaving
you are arriving.

  1. I had a dark moment last night. This poem has helped me remember that is part of the path to myself. Thank you.

  2. This morning, adorned with the new crescent moon, dancing in reach of our gigantic Jupiter, I find a perfect line: “you are not leaving, you are arriving”. This morning I give notice of my resigning from my day job of the last eight years. Not doubt, the offerings here in the LLP will find space in me in the days and months ahead, reorienting, letting myself be navigated by this miraculous world among worlds.
