Love, Care, Donate: see "The World We Live In" below...

Most Fridays, I put together this ‘resource round-up’ of news, events, and articles that I hope will inspire and support you in living a liberated life. If you have suggestions to share with other readers, please post in the comment section.

Spirit

Summertime Reading from Parker Palmer
I’ve been eyeing some of my favorite books on my bookshelf lately (yes, I really read the old-fashioned kind… no Kindle yet!). This week I’m appreciating Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation by Parker Palmer, an educator and a Quaker. The title comes from a Quaker saying which became the turning question for Parker in his early 30s. This book is a beautiful, gentle meditation on what it means to live the life you’re called to live, not the one that others expect of you. It’s one of those rare books that has stayed with me for many years after I read it. If you’re making some big changes in your life, it may speak to you as well.

Music for Your Spirit
This year, I discovered the music of Celtic harpist Lorin Grean when Lorin and I were on the same “Finding Your Elephant Self” journey to Thailand. Her original compositions are magical. See for yourself… check out this page of videos accompanied by Lorin’s music. (She creates the videos as well.) The first one you see on that page, “Elephant Journey,” is based on a poem that our traveling group wrote together during the trip. The images are just stunning… enjoy!

Make the Most of Your Time
Every once in a while I get on a productivity kick. It’s amazing how small shifts in habits and helpful tools can kickstart creativity (and hence liberation). One of my favorite books on that topic is The Power of Full Engagement, which emphasizes working in focus, intense periods of time and then taking a quick break to refresh and renew. Recently I discovered this “Pomodoro” timer – a very simple, elegant, and free online tool that helps you do just that, with ease. Give it a try and see how it works for you.

Writing Your Way Home
During the past month, I’ve learned about a wonderful resource for writers: the blog “Writing Our Way Home” created by Fiona Robyn and her partner, Kaspalita. Fiona recently interviewed me for their blog (you can read it here), and through that process I discovered all kinds of good things there: podcasts, a writing community, and e-courses to help spark your creativity, and more. Check it out!

The World We Live In

Love, Care, Donate: Help the People of Joplin, MO
Love, Care, Donate is a beautifully designed e-book that features inspiring stories from 60 writers (including yours truly) who have teamed up to help the people of Joplin, MO, hit hard by a tornado in May. Make a donation of any amount to receive the book and rack up some good karma as well.

  1. Maia,
I just watched and listened to (!) the Elephant Journey video. BEAUTIFUL!!! It heartened me considerably on a rather challenging morning. I LOVED seeing you sitting astride your elephant tossing water over her head!!!

    Blessings,
