Freedom Friday: 7/15 Resource Round-Up

“Freedom is the oxygen of the soul.” ~Moshe Dayan

Most Fridays, I put together this ‘resource round-up’ of news, events, and articles that I hope will inspire and support you in living a liberated life. If you have suggestions to share with other readers, please post in the comment section.

I’ve put this list together while on my California journey, so the spirit of the ocean is very much with me right now. May you feel much spaciousness and expansiveness in your own life as well…

Summertime Reading from Sharon Salzberg
Looking for some good summertime reading? Buddhist teacher Sharon Salzberg’s Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience is a powerful meditation on finding your greatest strength in the midst of adverse conditions. (As you can see, I’m not a frivolous summer reader!) This is one of my favorite books by Sharon, or anyone really… highly recommended if you are going through challenging times and need some sustenance.

Spend a Year at Harvard
Do you feel like you have more to contribute to the world? Did you ever dream of studying at Harvard University? This program might just be for you. Harvard’s “Advanced Leadership Initiative” gives older adults a chance to audit courses for a full year and to get support for creating a “social purpose project.” Take a look at the official program website here. It’s a bit hard to discern how one applies; when I dug a little bit, it seems that you begin on this page by expressing your interest to the folks at Harvard. Good luck!

Walk in Beauty… See Sacred Art in Ventura, CA
Here’s a plug for one of our Team Liberation members: Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo is a textile artist who creates beautiful fabric thangkas (sacred Tibetan Buddhist images). Leslie’s work will be on display July 23 and 24 at the ArtWalk in Ventura, California. If I was in the state, I’d go, but I’ll be back home in New Mexico by that time. So some of you will just have to go and enjoy it for me. See this website for more information on the ArtWalk. Leslie’s work is at the Bell Arts Factory, #2 on the map.

The World We Live In

Make a Big Difference
The idea behind the One Day’s Wages campaign is very simple: calculate your wages for one day of your work, donate that amount to an organization working to end extreme global poverty, and help spread the word. Simple but very powerful. Consider how a small amount of money (for many of us) can make a big impact:

  • $20 can provide clean water for one person for 20 years
  • $10 can purchase a bed net to help prevent malaria
  • $45 can pay annual school tuition for one child
