Book Giveaway and Review: The Fire Starter Sessions
NOTE: Updated May 5th — We have a winner for the giveaway… thanks to everyone who entered! Stay tuned for another book giveaway on May 15th.
Danielle LaPorte is a tantric master.
Actually, I don’t know that for a fact. But my experience of reading her new book, The Fire Starter Sessions: A Soulful + Practical Guide to Creating Success on Your Own Terms, felt like a tantric exercise.
Let me s’plain (as Ricky Ricardo might have said).
Tantra is a Tibetan Buddhist path that invites the practitioner to go deep into the heart of desire, so deep that you transcend the suffering-inducing attachment that usually goes along with desire. (In this context, this means desire of all kinds, not simply sexual desire.)
Instead, you come out the other end with pure gold, because you’ve touched into your true nature through the vehicle of your desire.
That’s what this book will do for you. Think of it as your guidebook to liberation.
Danielle writes that, “Happiness is creative tension.” The whole book invites you to dive into one creative tension after another, as a way to get at the root of your unique genius.
The Fire Starter Sessions is organized into three parts: Mojo, Moxie, and Results. Each section has sessions that focus on things like “Visioneering,” “The Metrics of Ease,” and “Money: More is More, Enough is Plenty.” There are powerful questions and worksheets throughout this book – you can’t read The Fire Starter Sessions without having a lot of fun and getting fully engaged.
In these questions and exercises, some of the things Danielle will challenge you to do include:
- Approve of your weaknesses
- Remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be
- Choose “easy” (but the quality kind of easy, not the cheap kind) and get out of your own way
If you already love Danielle writing on her blog, you probably don’t need any convincing to get this book. If you don’t know her work, you’re in for a mind- and heart-opening experience.
And one last thing – this is a magic book, or at least it was for me. The first night I started to read it, I made it through the first 37 pages then put it down by my bedside and fell asleep. I had vivid dreams throughout the night, weaving in some of the most beloved people in my life. When I awoke, one phrase from my dream was crystal clear: The world needs you to radiate.
Read this book and remember your own capacity to radiate.
Keep reading for a chance to win this book, or if you want to go ahead and order it for yourself or a friend, you can pick it up here.

Maia – You are so radiant with the love and joy in your life that I can’t help but to reexamine my own to see about getting into the path that was meant for me. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself and your experiences.

easy… it’s funny. it never occurred to me to even think about that until i came to santa fe and suddenly my life was easy. my poems got published, my quilts got shown, i found a place to live, i made new friends. i realized that when i started following the path i was supposed to follow the universe rose up to meet me, to clear the way for what i need to do. still, there is the fear that keeps me from pursuing it the way i long to. there is rent to pay, and insurance, and all those daily necessities of life. in my heart, i truly believe if i spent my days following my creativity those things would work themselves out, but it’s hard to make the leap (even knowing how well my last leap turned out).
i also tweeted this. thank you for continuing to inspire and challenge us and for the great giveaway opportunities. xoxo

I missed the birthday treat pay-what-you-can, and have regretted it ever since. I’ve been periodically checking in at the website, and the blog, and have been referring others to check out the Fire Starter Sessions. I look forward to reading and working from the book!

I already have Danielle’s book, but would love to gift another copy to someone else!
I often question myself about this “doing what is easy and comes naturally” thing vs. stretching myself, facing fears, walking head-on into discomfort and finding that I not only survive but grow. I’m afraid of public speaking, for example, and have a very hard time preparing presentations. It takes me forever too. But I’m constantly encouraged to create more speaking opportunities in order to become more known, to expose more people to my art. In relation to this, I seem to expand into discomfort at times, then retreat back into comfort for a while.
Just recently, for one event, I think I found a good middle path that allowed me to be purely at ease and in my strength. I hosted a Q&A session about my Stitching Buddhas program and made it clear that it was NOT a teleseminar. The marketing coaches probably wouldn’t have approved of my approach, but I was completely transparent, letting people know that I’m not good at presentations but I LOVE responding to people. It worked for me. And of course, I ended up talking just as much as I would have if I’d prepared a presentation, but without the pressure and formality. WITH the ease of responding to curious companions. I feel like this was one good step on the path to choosing what is natural for me.
Thanks for letting me share that, Maia!

It’s a great feeling to give away something transformative!

Thanks for all the responses so far, everyone!
I should have explained more about Danielle’s burning question — when she talks about “easy,” she actually means getting more in alignment with what comes naturally to us, not going against our own river, so to speak. Take a look at this video from Danielle and it might make more sense: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/danielle-laporte/creative-genius-challenge_b_1418152.html

Thank you for this opportunity!
If I only did what was easy I would be back where I began so many years ago: depressed, anxious, isolated.

You might be curious about my copyright mark- I am currently writing a book about joy, and reserve the right to use this.

I”m right there with Vicki – having JOY as the central focus of my life.
When I got home from out of town Sunday night, I put up a new quote magnet on the refrigerator. I then called in my husband, who had met me at the door, complaining of our 17 year old son’s not wanting to do homework, and our son, who had likewise adamantly complained about how he was being treated.
I then pointed to the magnet and told them both, “This is our new house rule.”
It said, “BE KIND. NO EXCEPTIONS.” I had walked into a miasma of negative energy. I turned it around very quickly. JOY! (And they will be led back to the quote magnet whenever necessary until it sinks in.)

Hi there this is a fantastic introduction to someone I don’t know anything about but already i am excited at the idea of reading her blog – and reading her book!
What would my life be like if I only did what was easy?
Mmmmm I feel I would probably go back to the UK and live in my old home again but this time with my new partner and his son. Not sure if it would be the best thing to do but it feels like an easier route than the one I am currently trying to follow!
I think I need to read her ideas on what ‘easy’ means.
love Kate

Hi, Maia! I would LOVE to read this book and use it to continue to transform my own life.
Gassho!

The book sounds quite good! Burning question: an easy life would begin with comfort, but the comfort would eventually yield to stagnancy and boredom. Boredom certainly isn’t a comfortable mind state to be in.

Danielle has been an inspiration to me for a couple years and I CANNOT wait to WIN this book! And when I discovered your LLP blog last December, it helped move me through some tough stuff. Didja know that? 😉
In today’s burning question she asks “What to You Want – That You Already Have?” And just last night I told a friend that I wanted more time in life to do the things and be with the people I love. Instead of making work the center of my life, I wanted to make JOY the center of my life. I have JOY, just moving it to the top of the list, stat! From joy, comes everything else.
Love you, love your blog, Maia!
